BIBLE STUDY: Worship

Discussion of last week’s assignment:
What were your thoughts on the assignment?
How did the assignment make you feel completing it?

I. What is the spiritual definition for worship?
Answer; worship is defined as the act and attitude of reverence, adulation and exultation to God.
The “Act” of worship is derived from the Hebrew definition called Shachah; to worship, prostrate oneself, or bow down. This was primarily the worship style throughout the Old Testament. It signifies bowing to ones superior in reference.

Scripture References;

Genesis 24:26- Then the man bowed down his head and worshiped the LORD.
Genesis 37:5-9-109 Then he dreamed still another dream and told it to his brothers, and said, "Look, I have dreamed another dream. And this time, the sun, the moon, and the eleven stars bowed down to me." 10 So he told it to his father and his brothers; and his father rebuked him and said to him, "What is this dream that you have dreamed? Shall your mother and I and your brothers indeed come to bow down to the earth before you?"
Genesis 43:28-And they answered, "Your servant our father is in good health; he is still alive." And they bowed their heads down and prostrated themselves.
Psalm 66:4-4 All the earth shall worship You And sing praises to You; They shall sing praises to Your name."
Psalm 95:6-6 Oh come, let us worship and bow down; Let us kneel before the LORD our Maker.
Judges 7:15-And so it was, when Gideon heard the telling of the dream and its interpretation, that he worshiped. He returned to the camp of Israel, and said, "Arise, for the LORD has delivered the camp of Midian into your hand
1 Samuel 15:25- Now therefore, please pardon my sin, and return with me, that I may worship the LORD.
1 Samuel 24:8- David also arose afterward, went out of the cave, and called out to Saul, saying, "My lord the king!" And when Saul looked behind him, David stooped with his face to the earth, and bowed down
Zephaniah 2:11-The LORD will be awesome to them, For He will reduce to nothing all the gods of the earth; People shall worship Him, Each one from his place, Indeed all the shores of the nations.

The “Attitude” of worship is derived from the Greek word called Proskuneo; to kiss, to lick ones hand, to show reference or to worship. The thrust of this word is to show emotions toward.

Scripture References;

Matthew 4:10-Then Jesus said to him, "Away with you, Satan! For it is written, 'You shall worship the LORD your God, and Him only you shall serve
Matthew 8:2- And behold, a leper came and worshiped Him, saying, "Lord, if You are willing, You can make me clean."
Matthew 15:25-Then she came and worshiped Him, saying, "Lord, help me!"
1 Corinthians 14:25-And thus the secrets of his heart are revealed; and so, falling down on his face, he will worship God and report that God is truly among you.
Revelation 13:4-So they worshiped the dragon who gave authority to the beast; and they worshiped the beast, saying, "Who is like the beast? Who is able to make war with him?"

The culmination of both the “Act” and the “Attitude” (Old and New Testament) was created by Jesus when he said, “23 But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. 24 God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth." John 4:23-24

True worship takes place on the inside of the heart or “Spirit of the worshipper. Worship pleasing to God must be unrestrained, transparent, and offered with a pure and humble heart.

Supported Scripture:
Psalm 103:1-2-1 A Psalm of David. Bless the LORD, O my soul; And all that is within me, bless His holy name! 2 Bless the LORD, O my soul, And forget not all His benefits:

Psalm 24:3-4-3 Who may ascend into the hill of the LORD? Or who may stand in His holy place? 4 He who has clean hands and a pure heart, Who has not lifted up his soul to an idol, Nor sworn deceitfully.

The hearts says, “God here I am” “All of me, all I have” The hands say, “I give you all, you are all, I love you.”

Worship is true intimacy with God that recognizes who He is, to the universe, the world, and you individually. (The attitude) Then its showing him how much you love him, by showing Him the honor, respect, and love He deserves for what He has done. (The act)

Worship in “Truth” connects the heart or spirit of worship to the “Truth” about God and His work of redemption as revealed by Jesus Christ. (Psalm 86:11) (Psalm 145:18)

Both Old & New Testaments Agree-The true worship of God is essentially internal and a matter of the heart and spirit.

Applied Text:

Old Testament:
Second Samuel 6:14-David dances before the lord with all his might! (All his might, symbolizes a, “Violent Praise”)
Second Samuel 6:20-23-Davids response to Michal about his worship style.

Here David worshipped God with all his might, (his heart) (The attitude) recognizing what God had done for him and with withholding nothing in worship. (The act)

In Spirit & in Truth

New Testament:
Luke 7:37-And behold, a woman who was in the city, a sinner; and when she knew that he was sitting at meat in the Pharisee's house, she brought an alabaster cruse of ointment, 38 and standing behind at his feet, weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears, and wiped them with the hair of her head, and kissed his feet, and anointed them with the ointment.

Here Mary ( John 12:1-8) worships Jesus in total humility, submission, and reverence. Like David she does not care what people think, her desire, her heart is to be in the presence of her King, the one that removed her sin. She gets on her knees, in tears, (the attitude) and begins to wipe the feet of Christ with her hair, as well as anoint him with the expensive oil. (The act)

In Spirit & in Truth

Worship is an act of showing God how much you understand His sacrifice for you. Its an attitude of pleasing him in spite of how much you show the world or anyone around you how much you love Him.

What matters is God sees your heart and true nature in worship. If God does, then He will
Inhabit the praises of His people. (Sit, lay with, abide in)

What is worship; Your heart and soul given to God, in limitless expressions, by any means necessary.

1 Therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, I urge you to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God; this is your spiritual worship.[1]
